Exclusion List Strategy

One of the most valuable multi-platform uses of Clay Ads: synchronized exclusion lists.

Without them, you're wasting budget showing "Book a Demo" ads to people who already bought, employees clicking ads that skew attribution, and prospects who already evaluated and passed.

🎯 The Three Critical Exclusions

1. Current Customers

  • Source: CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot) or product database
  • Update frequency: Daily
  • Why: Don't waste budget showing acquisition ads to people who already bought

2. Employees

  • Source: HR system or company email domain
  • Update frequency: Weekly
  • Why: Employees clicking your ads skews attribution and wastes money

3. Closed-Lost Opportunities

  • Source: CRM "Closed Lost" status
  • Update frequency: Weekly
  • Why: They evaluated and said no—save budget for new prospects

⚙️ Setting Up Synchronized Exclusions

In Clay

Here's how to build your master exclusion list:

  1. Create table: Exclusion_List_AllPlatforms
  2. Import from CRM: Current customers + closed-lost
  3. Add company email domain filter: Everyone at your company
  4. Enrich with personal emails (so exclusions actually work)
  5. Create audience sync to all 3 platforms
  6. Set sync frequency: Daily (real-time for customers)

In Ad Platforms

Once your Clay table is syncing, apply the exclusion list across all your ad platforms:

LinkedIn:

  • Campaign → Audiences → Exclusions → Add Exclusion_List_AllPlatforms
  • Apply to all prospecting campaigns

Meta:

  • Ad Set → Audiences → Exclude → Select Exclusion_List_AllPlatforms
  • Apply to all cold traffic campaigns

Google:

  • Campaign → Audiences → Exclusions → Add Exclusion_List_AllPlatforms
  • Apply to display and YouTube campaigns

💰 Expected Savings

The financial impact of proper exclusion lists is significant:

  • Typical B2B company: 5-15% of total ad spend wasted on existing customers
  • For $100K/month ad budget: Save $5K-15K/month

That's real money you can redirect toward acquiring new customers instead of remarketing to people who already bought.
