Setting Up Google Ads

Google Ads integration is currently available via CSV download and manual upload. A full native integration is coming soon to automate this process.

✅ Prerequisites

Before setting up Google Ads, make sure you have:

  • Admin access to Google Ads
  • An active Clay workspace
  • A table in Clay with contact data ready to sync
  • Email addresses (required for Google Customer Match)

🎯 Step 1: Prepare Your Audience in Clay

Start by building your audience in a Clay table. Email addresses are required for customer match, but you'll want to include additional fields for better results:

  • Required: Email addresses
  • Optional but recommended: Phone numbers, first name, last name, country

Tip: The more data fields you provide, the better your match rate will be.

📤 Step 2: Export from Clay

Clay makes exporting simple and automatically formats your data for Google's requirements:

  1. In your Clay table, click ActionsCreate Ad Audience
  2. Select Google Ads (CSV)
  3. Download the formatted CSV file
  4. Clay automatically formats it for Google's customer match requirements

⬆️ Step 3: Upload to Google Ads

Now you'll upload your audience to Google Ads:

  1. Go to Google Ads
  2. Click Tools & SettingsAudience Manager
  3. Click the + button → Customer list
  4. Upload your Clay CSV
  5. Map the fields (Clay's export should match automatically)
  6. Name your audience and click Upload and create

⏱️ Step 4: Wait for Processing

Google will process your customer list and provide match rate information within 24-48 hours.

⚙️ Google-Specific Settings

Here's what you need to know about Google's requirements:

  • Minimum audience size: 1,000 contacts
  • Match time: 24-48 hours
  • Data requirements: Email is required; phone, name, and address improve match rates
  • Match rate expectations: Typically 30-70% depending on data quality

💡 Best Practices for Google Ads

1. Meet the Minimum Size

Google requires at least 1,000 contacts for customer match. If your list is smaller, consider:

  • Expanding your target criteria
  • Combining multiple segments
  • Using this as a starting point and adding more over time

2. Optimize Your Data

Google Customer Match works best with:

  • Email addresses (required): Both work and personal emails work
  • Phone numbers: Include country code (e.g., +1 for US)
  • Names: First and last name improve matching
  • Location: Country, postal code help with matching

3. Use Multiple Match Keys

Providing multiple data points (email + phone + name) significantly improves match rates compared to email alone.

4. Format Your Data Correctly

Clay handles this automatically, but be aware:

  • Emails should be lowercase
  • Phone numbers should include country code
  • No special characters in names
  • Data should be UTF-8 encoded

5. Plan for the Wait

Unlike LinkedIn and Meta, Google takes 24-48 hours to process lists. Build this into your campaign planning.

🌐 Using Customer Match Across Google Properties

Once uploaded, your customer match audience can be used across:

  • Google Search: Target people actively searching
  • Google Display Network: Retarget with display ads
  • YouTube: Reach your audience with video ads
  • Gmail: Show ads in Gmail promotions tab

🔧 Common Google Ads Issues

  • "The audience is too small!” Google requires 1,000 contacts minimum. Expand your criteria or combine segments.
  • "Low match rate.” Add more data fields (phone, name, location) to improve matching. Check that email addresses are valid and correctly formatted.
  • "The upload failed." Make sure your CSV is in the correct format (Clay handles this automatically). Also, check that you have the required permissions in Google Ads.

🎯 What's Next

Stay tuned for our native Google Ads integration! This will enable you to sync audiences automatically, update in real-time, eliminate manual CSV uploads, and provide match rate feedback faster.
