Crunchbase integration

Crunchbase is a business intelligence tool that provides detailed company information and insights.

Through this integration, you can enrich companies, investment funds, and individual investors directly in Clay — including financials, funding history, growth and heat scores, predictive signals, press coverage, and competitors.

Enriching data with Crunchbase

1. While in a Clay table, click Add enrichment and search for Crunchbase.
2. Under Integrations, select one of the Crunchbase options.
3. In the modal, you will be asked to Select Crunchbase account.
   • If you haven't already connected your Crunchbase account, click + Add account and enter your Crunchbase API key. Otherwise, use the Clay provided key.

Most of the actions below are company enrichments, and they all work the same way on the input side: they take a single Company domain input, which accepts either a domain like clay.com or a Crunchbase organization URL like https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/clay-953f.

Each company action also returns the company's Crunchbase URL, domain, and name alongside the outputs listed in its own section, so those three are left out below.

The investment fund and people actions take different inputs. Those sections list their inputs in full.

Action Enrich company's basic information

Get essential company details like name, website, headquarters location, and industries.

Outputs

• Operating Status: Whether the company is still active.
• Short Description: A one-line summary of what the company does.
• Location: The company's headquarters, from city through to region.
• Founded On: The company's founding date.
• Ipo Status: Whether the company is private or public.
• Categories: The Crunchbase categories the company belongs to.

Get a company's Crunchbase categories and category groups, plus its short and full descriptions.

Get the full set of company-level insights Crunchbase has on file, from growth scores through to news events.

This is the widest of the Crunchbase actions, and what comes back varies by company — a well-covered company returns far more than a sparsely covered one. The scores and dates arrive as single values, and everything else arrives as a list you can expand.

• Growth score, Growth score 90-day change, Heat score, and Heat score 90-day change: The same scores and 90-day movements as the growth and heat scores action.
• Growth insight direction and Growth insight confidence: The trend Crunchbase sees, and its confidence in it.

• Short description and Description: The company's Crunchbase descriptions.

• Similar organizations: Competitors with a similarity score, plus the category, location, and product overlaps that drove the match.
• Press references: Articles mentioning the company, with title, publisher, author, posting date, and the other entities each article mentions.

Action Enrich a company's predictions

Get Crunchbase's predictive signals about what a company is likely to do next.

Outputs

Six prediction types come back, and each one shares the same shape: a Probability score, a Probability tier, the date it was Generated on, and the supporting signals Crunchbase drew on — things like growth insights, layoffs, legal proceedings, partnership announcements, and key employee changes.

• Acquisition predictions: How likely the company is to be acquired. Also includes a probability timeseries broken into 0–5, 6–11, 12–24, and 24-plus month windows.
• Growth predictions: How likely the company is to grow, plus its unicorn status.
• IPO predictions: How likely the company is to go public, plus media sentiment and unicorn status.
• Funding predictions: How likely the company is to raise again, plus its unicorn status.

Get up to the first 100 recent press articles mentioning a company.

Outputs

• Total Press Reference Count: How many press references Crunchbase has for the company in total, which can exceed the 100 returned.
• Press References: One entry per article.
  • Title: The article headline.
  • Publisher: Who published it.
  • Posted On: The publication date.
  • Url and Thumbnail Url: Links to the article and its image.

Action Enrich investment fund's details

View Crunchbase's estimates of an investment fund's fundraising history, including money raised, announcement dates, and creation dates for each vintage.

Inputs

• Company domain: The fund's domain or its Crunchbase organization URL.

Outputs

• Management Fund Name, Management Fund Domain, and Management Fund Crunchbase Url: Identifiers for the managing fund.

Get a person's basic Crunchbase profile, including their name, bio, social links, and location.

Get summary investor statistics for a principal, including how much they invest, how often they lead, and how many exits they've had.

Inputs

• Crunchbase URL: The principal's Crunchbase URL. This accepts either a person URL like https://www.crunchbase.com/person/john-doe or an organization URL like https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/acme-vc, so it works for both individual investors and firms.

Outputs

• Investor Type: The kind of investor, like Venture Capital.
• Investor Stage: The stage they typically invest at, like Early Stage Venture.

FAQs

Am I charged when Crunchbase has no data for a company?

No. When an action runs successfully but Crunchbase has nothing on file for that company, the credits are refunded automatically. This applies to every Crunchbase action, and you don't need to request anything.

I want insights data but I don't have my own Crunchbase API key

Enrich a company's growth & heat scores runs on the Clay provided key and returns the same Growth Score, Heat Score, and 90-day movements that Enrich a company's insights returns. If the scores are what you're after, start there.

The wider set of insights — similar organizations, press references, and the dated company events — is only available through Enrich a company's insights, which needs your own key.

I have an older column using a Crunchbase action I can't find any more

Two earlier actions, Enrich a company's growth insights and Enrich a company's funding predictions, have been replaced and no longer appear when you search for Crunchbase.

Their data now comes back through the newer actions:

• For growth insights, use Enrich a company's insights for the full picture, or Enrich a company's growth & heat scores for just the scores.
• For funding predictions, use Enrich a company's predictions, which returns funding predictions alongside acquisition, growth, IPO, closure, and layoff predictions.

Which action should I start with?

For most company research, Enrich company's basic information and Enrich company's financials cover the firmographics and funding totals you'll reach for most often.

Add the narrower actions when you have a specific question — Enrich a company's competitors for market mapping, Enrich a company's press references for recent coverage, or Enrich a company's growth & heat scores for a quick read on momentum.
